Florida City Campesinos’ Garden

Groundbreaking Ceremony 2014
Florida City, Florida

History

In 2014, the Campesinos' Gardens expanded to the Homestead/Florida City area. Following the Fellsmere model, community members came together to advocate with the City of Florida City to provide city-owned land for the new garden. Its purpose is to increase production of, access to, and consumption of healthy, fresh foods among low-income farmworker families through their participation in organic community gardens, markets, and garden and nutrition education.

How we operate

22 families are organized to be part of the garden, which is in the start-up phases. The Farmworker Association of Florida and the City of Florida City signed the agreement earlier this year for a great & large location near the FWAF office. They have a garden design plan, garden member rules, and had a groundbreaking ceremony in 2014

They've completed several permitting processes,  built the fence and garden beds, and planted their first crops. In the first year, food produced from the Florida City Campesinos’ Garden is expected to reach more than 75 families.
